Where do I even start? It’s so hard not to begin this post with a huge squeal, given that this month’s featured brand happens to be one of my favorites! Beauty Heroes has a knack for choosing great products, so I knew it was only a matter of time before they featured Maya Chia, but I was still ecstatic when I opened the January box. I, among other bloggers, have talked and talked and talked about Maya Chia over the past year and they are worth every. single. bit. of the hype. Their super hero product is (of course) The Super Couple and it’s the product that I originally fell in love with and what got me hooked on their line. It’s fitting that Beauty Heroes chose this product to be the hero this month and introduce all of their members to Maya Chia with it.
What makes The Super Couple special is mainly two things. First, the chia seed oil that Maya Chia uses is superior to any other. Chia seed oil is known to be excellent for skin hydration, by nourishing the skin with omegas, antioxidants and minerals, along with improving the skin’s moisture barrier. Chia seed oil is a light weight oil that absorbs in quickly and really moisturizes deeply. The difference between most chia seed oils and what Maya Chia uses comes down to how it’s extracted. The founder of Maya Chia, Susanne Norwitz, found a supercritical extraction method that’s free of chemicals, solvents or oxygen. This not only helps to keep the oil as close to the plant based form as possible, but it also stabilizes the product and increases shelf life compared to most chia seed oil.
The second component that makes The Super Couple a powerhouse product is the astaxanthin. Just what is that? It’s a naturally-occurring carotenoid in things like shrimp, lobsters, algae and even flamingos that get their color from eating astaxanthin rich foods like shrimp. It’s been dubbed the ‘king of carotenoids’ and ‘nature’s strongest antioxidant’ by a lot of health communities and according to Maya Chia, studies have shown it to be 65 times stronger than vitamin C in fighting against free radicals. That’s pretty incredible considering free radicals can be responsible for aging the skin and irregular cell growth that can lead to cancer. It also happens to give The Super Couple it’s bright coral color.
After having a somewhat confusing relationship with face oils, this one has been a game changer for me. I’ve had my moments where I thought face oils were everything, and then I’ve had times where my skin felt parched despite my obsessive layering of heavy oils. After I tried The Super Couple and my skin felt very hydrated and actually looked glowing, I did a little research. Some oils really have a hard time being absorbed into the skin due to their particle size. So while it might feel like a rich, thick oil, it’s not going to penetrate your skin and do much in the way of hydration. The Super Couple has micro particles that penetrate your skin and absorb in deeply. That’s why I saw such a difference with this oil versus some others I tried. Of course, I also have to comment on how much I adore the way it smells. It has a fresh, clean, gorgeous scent that relaxes me as soon as I put it on.
The side kick this month is the Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm, which is in a limited edition scent just for Beauty Heroes. A blend of supercritical chia seed oil, apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, beeswax and more, melt into your skin to moisturize deeply. You can use it anywhere from your lips to your toes. On really cold nights, I even layer it over my face oil. Normally it has a lovely, light citrusy scent, but they traded that for a deeper, more complex scent for this special edition. The scent is actually still very beautiful, so I can’t decide which version I like better.
Some changes you may have noticed this month if you’re a subscriber: Notably absent is the super hero mask we’ve all come to know and love. After a lot of careful thought, Beauty Heroes has stepped forward into the new year with even higher standards for their packaging and how environmentally friendly it is. There really just isn’t an eco-friendly way for them source the masks, so they made the tough decision to move on without them, to become the most sustainable company they can be. In their place, you’ll find a #herogram card in the box which will feature quotes and bits of inspiration. With this shift, every part of the box, from the printed sticker to the packing material, is all 100% recycled, eco-friendly material. I really have to commend them for being so devoted to their mission and constantly evaluating how well all of their actions fit into their vision for Beauty Heroes.
