Planning for a baby comes with lots of excitement, decisions and reading up on all things baby. One of the most fun and also, daunting parts is putting together the nursery. If you’re like me, you want everything to be stylish, functional and most importantly, safe for your new baby. To take the guess work out of creating a safe haven for your precious little one, I’m giving you a quick and easy guide for setting up an organic nursery AND I’ve teamed up with Noble Carriage to give one lucky reader a head start in creating their all natural space with a $50 gift card to NobleCarriage.com. Not only is everything they carry über stylish, it’s all made from the safest, highest quality materials around. They have a gorgeous collection of organic clothing, bedding and accessories, along with nontoxic toys, bibs and even the most adorable bonnets you’ve ever seen. Seriously, it’s enough to make you swoon (and maybe even enough to have another baby just so I can dress them in all these precious things!).

Creating The Nursery

No doubt, you’ll be buying furniture, bedding, rugs, and even painting the walls when you set out to create the nursery. All of that brings me to one of the most important things to consider when creating the nursery: indoor air quality. Conventional furniture, rugs and even the crib mattress are treated with flame retardants and often made with manmade materials like particle board, vinyl and more. All of these things have proven to not only off-gas into the room, but tests have shown alarming amounts of things like flame retardants in the urine of babies and small kids. With indoor air quality, it’s often the things we can’t touch or see (but can sometimes smell) that have the biggest impact on our bodies. Here’s a quick guide for choosing the safest options for the nursery:

  • Furniture: Solid wood with no particle board, painted with a zero VOC paint or finish, or vintage items (which have likely already off-gassed). Psst- Noble Carriage is launching a line of all natural cribs from Ouef later this week!
  • Rugs: Vintage or made of 100% natural materials like wool, sisal, etc, that haven’t been treated with stain repellant or flame retardants. (Wool is naturally flame resistant)
  • Paint: Choose zero VOC paint. There are so many great options out there these days! We like Benjamin Moore Natura.
  • Crib Mattress: This is probably the one I feel the strongest about since little ones spend so many hours sleeping on it each day and night. Choose an organic or all natural mattress not treated with flame retardants and without a vinyl cover which also off gasses. Mattresses made of wool or latex are naturally flame resistant. Our favorite crib mattress is this one.
  • Mattress cover: babies are messy so mattress protectors are essential, but be sure to choose one not made out of vinyl. Instead, there are great ones made with everything from wool to bamboo to organic cotton. We went with this one, which is made from organic cotton with a breathable polyester back.

If you go vintage on any of the items above, be sure they meet current safety standards- especially for cribs. We incorporated a mix of new and vintage items in both my kid’s nurseries and I love the character and charm it gave the rooms.

Accessories, etc.

After you have the main pieces of the room together, it’s time to think about the details and all the odds and ends you’ll need for the baby! This is one of my favorite parts. We try to choose natural fibers and materials, like organic cotton, whenever possible for clothing and bedding and the same goes for toys that will inevitably end up in your baby’s mouth. Luckily, Noble Carriage has a great selection of organic clothing, bedding and toys! Here are some of my favorites:
